Our story

Centuries of weaving, made fair

The huarache is a woven leather sandal with roots deep in Mexico, where its open, hand-woven design has been made for centuries. Huarache works with small Mexican workshops that cut and weave the leather by hand, paying fairly for skilled, traditional work. The result is a sandal that is cool, flexible and made to be lived in — the straps shaped to your foot, the leather softening as you walk. It is a design centuries old, and the hands that make it are the reason it endures.

How it's made

Each sandal is cut from quality leather and woven by hand into the classic open strap pattern, then fitted with a leather or rubber sole and finished. The weaving is traditional and done by skilled makers in small Mexican workshops.

How to use it

Wear them barefoot for the classic look, or with a low sock. The leather softens and the straps shape to your foot with wear, so break them in gradually. Keep the leather conditioned and dry them away from direct heat.

Good to know

How do I care for them?

Keep the leather conditioned, dry them away from direct heat, and wipe them clean as needed. The care balm in the gift set keeps the leather soft and supple.

How should they fit?

Snug but comfortable, with the straps shaping to your foot as the leather softens. Break them in gradually, and the woven straps will mould to a personal, comfortable fit.

Is it a medical or safety product?

No. It is a leather sandal for everyday wear. It is footwear, not a medicine and not a certified safety device — for hazardous work, use purpose-made protective footwear.

Are they fair trade?

Yes. We work directly with small Mexican workshops and pay fairly for the skilled, traditional work of weaving each pair by hand. The fair price is part of how the craft endures.
